Savannah with Nikki Krecicki

Nikki Krecicki is a former fashion and portrait photographer and founder of Provisions, a project that connects the creative community through gatherings, food and art. A place where the culinary and creative industries collide, Provisions started in New York City but now calls Savannah home, where it highlights emerging culinary brands, local artisan goods and purveyors, and low-intervention wines.

Talk us through a day in the life of Nikki Krecicki in Savannah.

My routine in Savannah, GA has been very simple since opening Provisions. I live close to the store in historic downtown and my day-to-day life is centered within a few blocks. My favorite morning is walking my family’s dog around the park squares and having a calm morning. The quietness in the mornings and late evenings in Savannah is beautiful, especially in late summer as the air gets cooler and cicadas buzz. I’ll make a simple breakfast and then head to Provisions and get the bread, wine, pantry items and cheese deliveries all sorted. Provisions is open seven days a week, so my day is just being at the store talking with new and recurring customers. It’s been very sweet forming relationships with customers and being part of their weekly routines and special occasions. I love how food and wine connect people and enhance celebrations big and small. I wanted my life to be formed around nourishment and it’s touching living that out through the shop.

What places in your neighborhood that are part of your daily life would you recommend?

Since moving to Savannah a year ago it’s been a delight getting to know my fellow business owners that are scattered throughout the neighborhood and downtown.

During the week, I’ll stop by my friend Kelsey Bucci’s clean beauty and wellness shop, Paris Laundry. I’ve been converting all of my skincare to her signature products. Once or twice a week I try to stop by Matt & Elise’s coffee shop, Origin Coffee Bar. They roast everything in-house and the café is a perfect oasis. There is no shortage of nightlife options in Savannah, the city is known for having a good time. There is a wonderful cocktail bar, Savoy, where the owner Jane serves a killer martini selection and makes really fun cocktails. If you’re in the mood for wine and some of the best food in Savannah, head to Late Air. Madeline and Collin have blown it out of the water with their niche natural wines and food. It’s one of my favorite spots and they always are hosting incredible chefs from around the south east at their frequent pop-ups.

Out of your day-to-day life, what special places in the city would you recommend?

My favorite place for an occasion with family and friends is the farm-to-table restaurant, Common Thread. It’s in an old Victorian house under huge oak trees. The General Manager and Wine Director, Libby Burk, has done an incredible job with their wine program, highlighting many intentional and small low-intervention producers. Common Thread’s menu changes with the seasons and every dish is packed with flavor!

Another of my favorite spots is The Wyld Dockbar. It’s on an idyllic marsh and their menu focuses on local seafood and seasonal produce. It’s the best place to enjoy the beauty of the low country with a frozen painkiller cocktail and a basket of fried shrimp.

Provisions started in New York, hosting gatherings and connecting creatives and culinary brands. What was behind the move to Savannah?

I started Provisions in 2019 while working as a fashion photographer and a photo producer at Vogue. New York City can be an isolating place and I was craving dinner parties to help spur connection. One thing led to another and this idea of dinner parties at home transformed into charitable events that intersected the creative and culinary industries. The events I produced for Provisions went on for three years, even during the pandemic when it switched to online workshops and performances. During this time, I wanted to create a permanent home for Provisions where I could host events more often and create a stable community center. A trip back to the low country got my wheels turning and a few conversations with mentors opened my eyes to creating this home in Savannah. For a culinary and hospitality city, Savannah has little grocery options downtown. It felt like a perfect fit to gather brands that I worked with and enjoyed in NYC down to Savannah, and Provisions is now a home for emerging culinary brands, local artisan goods and purveyors and low-intervention wines.

Which of your gatherings have been most memorable and why?

Every event has taught me something and I value the friends that have collaborated with me. At my first event, I had 90 people come out for an art show and happy hour benefitting City Harvest. Kin Euphorics was one of our first sponsors and it's been so cool seeing them grow over the past few years. Okay Kaya performed and it was special embarking on this journey that would take me to the brick and mortar shop I have now. I also hosted a yoga, somatic breathwork and sound bath in the Savannah shop in June. That workshop brought tears to my eyes using my space as a place of healing and connection. The somatic breathwork was a moving experience and hearing people burst out in laughter but also sobbing brought home that Provisions isn’t just a specialty grocery store but a community hub.

What’s one great insider tip for getting the most out of the city?

Walk everywhere! Grab a drink, it’s open container in Savannah so you can walk around with a glass or wine or cocktail. Once you have your drink in hand, just get lost wandering the squares and streets. The architecture is some of the oldest in the country and the details are enchanting. Huge oak trees line the roads, with Spanish moss dripping down. Savannah is a romantic city and it’s extremely walkable, take advantage if you can!
